Courbet – Dreams of a Realist

25.9.2021 – 2.1.2022

The exhibition ‟Courbet – Dreams of a Realist”  at the Oskar Reinhart Collection 'Am Römerholz' presents the collection’s entire works by Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) for the first time, as only parts of the group have been on display until now. Complemented by individual, high-quality paintings on international loan, the exhibition gives a broad overview of the artist’s work.

Oskar Reinhart justifiably held Courbet in particularly high esteem as a pioneer of modernism. Courbet’s profound, often also provocative approach to the conventions of romanticism and to the concepts of a realistic representation method hit a nerve at the time.

His work consistently featured an uncompromising commitment to painting and remains as contemporary today as it was then.
